Open Education Analytics: A starting point for broad capacity-building in learning analytics development across the education sector

Open Education Analytics (OEA) is for education systems who see the need to move past siloed data investments and are ready to embrace a transformation mindset, leveraging data as a core enabler to drive education system and learning success. Data and ethical AI are poised to become the most exciting and important digital enablers in education.

OEA is an open source community of leading education systems collaborating in setting up their modern data estates and developing innovative and ethical uses of data and AI in education, focusing on how systems and universities can use their own data.

What is it?

An international community developing shared insights and practices on the use of data and AI in education. This is an opportunity for international co-creation and innovation to speed up system-level use of modern data services that enable advanced analytics and AI.

Open source technology sharing through Open Education Analytics where the community develops and contributes technical resources such as a standard architecture, shared data pipelines, analytical models, dashboard templates, and data governance processes.

A conversation to address challenges and concerns, giving special priority to stakeholder inclusion, ethical AI, quality, reliability, security, fairness, and transparency.

Education and talent development for the education ecosystem. Skills development and training for data architects, data scientists, education researchers, learning analytics experts, as well as materials to use with teachers and school leaders.

How will Microsoft help?

Microsoft Education is committed to helping education systems leverage modern data services and ethical AI to gain visibility into how to improve learning most effectively, particularly when more learning is shifting to remote and hybrid models.

Microsoft Education will:

  1. Coordinate and curate the OEA
  2. Open source approach to developing the modern data estate with Open Education Analytics.
  3. Learning paths and materials to develop in-house data expertise, as well as partners who can help you locally.

Guidance and process for applying Principles of Responsible AI to education use cases.

What can the OEA Community achieve together?

This Global OEA Community provides a common platform for leaders to collaborate, coordinate and identify the right scenarios for modern data innovation and AI.

The OEA Community includes education systems, Microsoft experts, leading international organizations, and technical partners to support the work.

The components of the collaboration include:

Open-source technical resources, including a standard architecture for education analytics and AI in the cloud, modern data security and privacy tools, data visualization and reporting templates, and repeatable machine learning models.

Capacity-building to help education systems develop their own expertise in analytics and AI.

Applying principles of responsible data and AI to learning analytics to ensure the appropriate and ethical use of data by education systems and educators.

A community of practice among large education systems, collaborating in developing these resources, defining best practices, and sharing insights from learning analytics.

Data and AI use cases such as….

Machine learning models to predict at risk or vulnerable students and identify the supports they need.

Digital engagement data visualizations to see how students are using their digital learning applications in real time, and its impact on learning.

Monitoring, evaluation and research of programs and investments using live data signals for rapid improvement.

Personalized learning recommendations for content, skills, assessments, and well-being.

Dashboards for exploring patterns across provinces, universities, and classes.
