Eldridge van der Westhuizen

Data Analytics and Special Projects Manager

Eldridge van der Westhuizen is a passionate IT professional with 22 years’ experience in the IT field.  He obtained his Diploma and Bachelor degrees in IT from the Port Elizabeth Technikon.  He continued his studies and completed his Master’s degree in IT from the Nelson Mandela University in 2011.  He is currently completing his PhD in IT with a special focus on Health Informatics.  Eldridge has a strong IT engineering background, with specialised skills in Linux/Unix, Networking, Firewalling, Databases and Cloud Computing.  He was involved in the formation of the first Cisco Academy of Africa and taught Cisco networking courses to students for 3 years with a 100% pass rate.  He has 19 years’ experience in tertiary education environment, of which 14 years was in an IT engineering environment.  Since 2015 until June 2020, he managed a team of 40 individuals following the ITIL framework to provide effective and efficient ICT services at the Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth and also fulfilled the interim role of IT Director reporting to the Chief Information Officer.   He joined Durban University of Technology in July 2020 as Director of Information Technology Support Services and managed all IT operations.   

Eldridge also ran his own consulting IT firm for 10 years providing IT services to many companies in the Eastern Cape, including Nelson Mandela University, Volkswagen SA, General Motors, Aspen Pharmacare, BASF and Business Connexion to mention a few.  This experience has instilled a diverse range of IT skills ranging from being technically strong to the ability to provide strong governance and strategic direction at executive management level.   

He is a member of the Institute of Information Technology Professionals South Africa (IITPSA), as well as a long-standing member of ASAUDIT (Association of South African University Directors of Information Technology).   

Eldridge is a firm believer that in a world of technology, people make the difference.  He is looking forward to his tenure at HEITSA and to provide IT solutions to all Universities.
